The Philadelphia Fed’s August general-activity index rose from 41.4 in July to 47.4, its highest reading since April 2021. That is the August Manufacturing Business Outlook Survey, released 20 August at 8:30 a.m. ET. Survey responses were collected from 10 to 17 August. This is a beat versus both calendars. The two forecasts are not averaged.
Factory’s Philly Fed line on the Forex Factory calendar is 47.4 against a 24.1 forecast and a previous of 41.4. FXStreet’s event page has 47.4 against a 25 consensus and the same 41.4 previous.
Future activity 73.6 is the highest since August 1983
The same official page says the future general-activity index climbed 39 points to 73.6, its highest reading since August 1983. The employment index rose 18 points to 27.9, its highest reading since April 2022. New orders fell 7 points to 30.1. Shipments declined from 33.7 to 27.7. Prices paid fell 13 points to 40.9. Prices received declined 10 points to 17.7.

Claims print 206K against 210K
In the same 8:30 a.m. ET slot, the Department of Labor printed seasonally adjusted initial claims of 206,000 for the week ending 15 August, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week was revised up by 3,000 from 209,000 to 212,000. The four-week moving average was 204,000. Continuing claims, as insured unemployment for the week ending 8 August, were 1,799,000.
